 eSports (electronic sports), is a version of online gaming that is a spectator sport. The eSport experience is similar to physical attendance at a sporting event except that attendance is virtual. Think of it as watching the video screen in a stadium, your TV or computer where you are included in a virtual environment.
 
The following extract from an article in The Harvard International Review offers insight into the state of eSports.
 
...the most pressing esports developments have revolved around a central dilemma: players’ rights. This problem is best highlighted in players’ contracts. In the European Union and the United States, players must be at least 18 years old to enter a contract, while in other areas, such as Scotland, they can do so at 16. At the beginning of esports, players fell under contracting law because their only form of revenue came from tournament winnings. As teams have increased their control over players’ schedules and conduct, however, players are being labelled as employees. This creates a legal ambiguity that has the potential to cause problems. Multiple parties can theoretically be called employers, including the teams, the individual leagues—a player competing in North America cannot simultaneously stream in Korea—and the publishers themselves. The current solution has been for publishers to dictate the standards for teams that want to compete in their leagues, and the teams in turn incorporate those conditions into their player contracts. ...
