The tour leaves from Durban and progresses through Pietermaritzburg which is the capital of KwaZulu Natal and then goes up to Sani Pass.

The Sani Pass is a 33km gravel road that straddles the sheer cliffs of the Drakensberg escarpment in a series of tight Zig Zag curves. The route begins at the Sani Pass Hotel which is 1566m above sea level. You will be travelling in a Land Rover 4×4 upwards along the narrow road crossing the South African/ Lesotho border post which is 1968m above sea level. Along the way up the South African landscape of KwaZulu Natal opens up in front of you displaying spectacular views of rolling hills and vast skies.

Experience the beauty of Sani Pass via 4x4 vehicle on a day trip from South Africa into the mountain kingdom of Lesotho and back. Set out from Durban and pass through the exquisitely preserved Victorian city of Pietermaritzburg en route to the World Heritage Suni Pass, a steep pass rising 9,429-feet above sea level. Once crossing the border (bring your passport) visit a traditional Sotho village filled with huts built around a central area filled with livestock. Afterward, savor incredible views while enjoying lunch (own expense) at Africa's highest pub.

What You Can Expect

The tour leaves from Durban and passes through Pietermaritzburg ,which is the capital and second largest city in the province. This city is set amidst the forested hills and rolling countryside of the Natal-Midlands. Pietermaritzburg is one of the best-preserved Victorian cities in the world.

The tour then carries onto Sani Pass which is a World Heritage Site between South Africa and Lesotho 2874 metres above sea level. The Sani Pass is the mother of all passes. It is a 33km gravel road that straddles the sheer cliffs of the Drakensburg escarpment in a series of tight zig zag curves. It is an amazing 4x4 track twisting and snaking it's way up to the top of the world. You cross the South African/ Lesotho border post which is 1968m above sea level (passports required) entering into Lesotho country. Here you will meet the Sotho people who have a unique African mountain culture. They live in traditional huts, herd sheep's and goats up the mountain, grow crops by ox-ploughing and hand-hoeing in a way that will intrigue visitors.

You will then have lunch or drinks at the highest pub in Africa which sits at 2873m above sea level (own expense). The tour then leaves and heads back to Durban.
