10b. Kamberg Bushman Rock Paintings

Bushman Rock Paintings found in Kamberg, situated on the foot hills of the Drakensburg Mountains are plentiful. This site houses a greater volume of paintings which include some of the best preserved paintings in South Africa. Reaching this site is slightly more strenuous then the Gaints Castle, you will embark on a 90 minutes going to the sites and 60 minutes coming back.

What You Can Expect

Mandela Capture Site

The tour kick starts from Durban and heads to Pietermaritzburg, which is the capital of KwaZulu Natal. You will be fascinated by their city hall which is the largest brick building in the Southern Hemisphere. Upon entering the hall, you will be struck by the magnificent stained glass displays and the massive pipe organ, which is the largest south of the equator.

You will then travel to the Giants Castle Nature Reserve, a World Heritage Site, that was named after the peaks of the Drakensberg mountains whose silhouette resembles that of a sleeping giant. The Giants Castle Nature Reserve is home to Elands, baboons, and the rare bearded vulture. It is famous for the amazing San Rock Art that provides visitors an insight into the world of the San people. The caves fascinate guests by the ancient rock paintings created by the historic San people that once inhabited this spectacular area. The walk to the main caves is 45 minutes going up and 45 minutes coming down.

Then head off to the Nelson Mandela Capture Site where the famous Mr. Nelson Mandela was captured and sent to prison for 27 years, this is where his "Long Walk To Freedom" began. The site is just outside of Howick.

The last visit for the day will be to the Howick Falls which is 95 metres in height. The local Zulu people call it "KwaNogqaza" which means "Place of the tall one". Then board your transportation for the journey back to Durban.
